Do More Pigeons Live in Urban Areas, or Wild Areas?
Pigeons are a bird species that have adapted well to living in cities. The truth is they do not have any problems adapting to living near humans. They also live in the wild which makes one wonder; do more pigeons live in urban areas, or wild areas? The best way to answer this question is by looking at the pigeon's habitat.
Prefer living in urban areas and cities
If they had a choice, pigeons would prefer living in urban areas because the buildings erected by humans allow them to thrive. They are able to use these urban area buildings for their use. If pigeons come across tall buildings that have ledges, then this kind of building actually mimics a natural cliff and wild pigeons will therefore be attracted to such buildings. They can roost and build their nests in such places without any problems. Best of all, pigeons that live in urban areas never have trouble finding food for themselves.
Living in caves and the wild
However, pigeons do not only like to live in urban areas because they are also found in caves as well as in caves in the wilderness. No doubt, they find urban area very attractive, but pigeons also like living in barns and abandoned homes in wild areas. Here, they have abundant supply of food and since they like to feed on animal food, they prefer barns and homes in wild areas. They are also attracted by spilled grains and garden waste as well as by other foods that are readily available in such places.
Large rocky cliffs
When pigeons choose to live in wild areas, they like to make their homes on large rocky cliffs. This is where they have conventionally build their nests. They like rocky cliffs because they provide protection to pigeons from wild predators who are unable to gain access to their nests and to them. When in the wild, pigeons also like to live in caves, especially near cave openings. In such an environment, pigeons tend to live on seeds and gains and they are also able to get enough food in the form of fruit insects and snails as well as slugs.
The bottom line is pigeons live in every part – be it urban or in the wild. They will not stop at making their nests in forests and in villages as well as in urban areas. They are even known to live in deserts where they can use the succulent plants as a water source. Pigeons also make their homes in islands but are not found in the higher parts of the Antarctica. The extreme climatic conditions of the Antarctica's higher parts prevent pigeons from making their homes there. Other than that, they are prepared to live wherever they can build their nests and find food and water.
